The Oncology program provides support and treatment to patients with cancer within their own community. The services included are breast health centre, chemotherapy clinic, pain and symptom management, inpatient consultation and clinical trials.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for Oncology supports the vision, strategic direction, leadership, operational management and clinical practices at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Looking for a candidate who enjoys working within a very collegial oncology team and who embraces expansion of knowledge, skill set and enjoys new learning opportunities.
The successful candidate to the oncology NP role will work alongside another oncology NP colleague – the NP will work to full scope to practice within the interprofessional team model (Oncologists/ oncology nurses/pharmacists/social work/ secretaries) will be primarily responsible for direct patient care in a consultative/collaborative model, as well as participation in staff education and research, and program evaluation. The Oncology NP will be involved with direct comprehensive care, procedures, pain and symptom management, supportive care, patient navigation, and will cover a full range of inpatient and outpatient services in rotation. Integration of best practice guidelines and current evidence-based research into clinical practice is an expectation. The NP will order and review patient pathology, imaging results, labs and discuss with the oncologist to create a treatment and symptom management plan. Successful candidate will be supporting treatments and procedures for pain and symptom management as well as diagnostics as determined in consultation with the oncologists.
Identification of areas of improvement to promote ongoing quality assurance, plans, implements and evaluates and reports outcomes.
The Oncology NP provides patient care in accordance with legislative acts and frameworks guiding NP practice such as those from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA), the Public Hospitals Act, the Nursing Act and established medical directives. The NP will demonstrate competency to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the RN(EC) legislated scope of practice and designated medical directives, as appropriate.
Telephone follow-up post-discharge from the clinic, external capacity building exercises, weekend and after-hours coverage may be required.
What you bring to the role:
Master’s Degree in Nursing Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN (EC) – Nurse Practitioner-Primary Health Care (PHCNP) or Nurse Practitioner-Adult (NP-Adult) CONC certification is preferred Minimum of 3 – 5 years of current expertise in acute oncology Membership in the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario Membership in the Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario, preferred Advanced clinical knowledge and implementation of evidence-based practice Superior interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills Experience in synthesis and documentation of comprehensive findings for consultation reports Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development Participation in oncology initiatives and cancer care Ontario QBP model of care Experience interacting with interprofessional students Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, IMPAX, Meditech Demonstrated good attendance and performance records with the ability to maintain these same standards Demonstrated commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with organization related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
Work Schedule:
The successful candidate will work primarily days but may be required to cover some evenings or weekends as model of care changes – primarily 7.5 hour shifts
