Position Summary

As a Nurse Practitioner in this dual-capacity role, you will:

Provide Specialized Oncology & Palliative Care:
• Deliver expert, evidence-based oncology care in both outpatient (clinic) and inpatient settings through the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic.
• Coordinate and provide treatments including chemotherapy, biotherapy (immunotherapy), supportive therapies, and symptom management.
• Offer compassionate palliative care across all inpatient units, ensuring dignified and supportive end-of-life care.

Lead as a Most Responsible Practitioner (MRP):
• Serve as the MRP in a hospital setting, with the authority to admit, discharge, and independently manage patients.
• Provide full-scope care supported by comprehensive hospital resources.
• Collaborate closely with internal medicine, family medicine, specialists, subspecialists, and an interprofessional team to deliver holistic care.
• Manage diverse patient diagnoses and support individuals and families through complex post-acute care needs.

Innovate and Inspire:
• Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes.
• Educate and mentor colleagues, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
• Contribute to the advancement of cancer and hospital medicine through evidence-informed practice and collaboration.

Required

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the Extended Class (RN-EC). NP – Adult preferred; however, NP – Primary Health Care with relevant hospital-based experience will also be considered.
• Master’s degree in nursing (MN/MScN) from a recognized academic institution.
• Authorized to prescribe controlled substances in accordance with CNO regulations.
• Minimum of 3 years’ clinical experience in oncology, acute inpatient care, or critical care nursing.
• Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience functioning in an NP role.
• Previous experience in oncology and/or palliative care is strongly preferred.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset.
• Demonstrated clinical leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making skills in a complex healthcare environment.
• Proven ability in advanced health assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and therapeutic interventions.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients and clinical needs effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to build rapport and collaborate effectively with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
• Committed to patient- and family-centered care and the principles of cultural safety and equity.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary care teams.
• Demonstrated understanding of patient safety principles, risk mitigation, and adherence to hospital policies, professional standards, and legal requirements.
• Experience functioning as a Nurse Practitioner – Most Responsible Practitioner (NP-MRP) is preferred but not required.

Duties

As a Nurse Practitioner at Quinte Health, you will provide expert, compassionate care with a primary focus on oncology and palliative services, while also practicing as a Most Responsible Practitioner (MRP) in select inpatient post-acute units. This advanced practice role combines clinical excellence with leadership, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Primary responsibilities include:

Delivering Comprehensive Oncology Care
• Providing direct, patient-centered oncology care in both outpatient (cancer clinic) and inpatient settings.
• Managing patients receiving chemotherapy, biotherapy (immunotherapy), and supportive therapies such as blood transfusions and symptom management.
• Conducting thorough patient assessments, monitoring treatment response, and coordinating care across the cancer care continuum.
• Supporting patients and families with education, counselling, and emotional support throughout their cancer journey.

Providing Palliative and End-of-Life Care
• Leading compassionate palliative care across all inpatient units, ensuring dignity, comfort, and support for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
• Collaborating with palliative physicians and the healthcare team to manage pain and complex symptoms, and to support decision-making and advance care planning.

Functioning as Most Responsible Practitioner (MRP)
• Managing patients independently within the scope of an NP, including admission, discharge, documentation, assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, and performing procedures.
• Practicing in post-acute inpatient units including Complex Continuing Care, Rehabilitation, Assess and Restore, and Alternate Level of Care.
• Clinical Leadership & Collaboration
• Collaborating with the interprofessional team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans.
• Responding promptly to changes in patients’ health status and needs, ensuring safety and promoting optimal function and quality of life.
• Acting as a clinical resource, mentor, and educator to colleagues, learners, and team members.
• Evidence-Based Practice & Quality Improvement
• Leading and contributing to the development of clinical guidelines, protocols, and pathways that reflect current research and best practices in oncology and hospital medicine.
• Participating in program planning, quality improvement initiatives, and system-level changes to improve patient care and outcomes.
• Advocating for vulnerable patients and championing person- and family-centered care throughout the health system.
