McMaster Children's Hospital is the regional academic centre for pediatric acute care, rehabilitation, developmental and mental health services. The home base for this position is the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre (RJCHC) of McMaster Children’s Hospital, a state-of-the-art outpatient campus of MCH, and houses the Developmental Pediatrics Rehabilitation Program and Children’s Treatment Centre (transitioning to SmartStart Hub as part of the modernization of early intervention and special needs services across the province) as well as community-based Behavioural Health and Mental Health services.
The Pediatric Ambulatory Clinics at MCH and RJCHC provide outpatient care to over 100,000 pediatric patients from Hamilton and the surrounding area. It is a dynamic, fast paced environment comprised of numerous sub-specialty clinics that facilitate the unique health care needs of children, using an innovative, family centered, integrated model of care. Ontario has established regional and local Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnostic hubs across the province.
The local diagnostic hub will assess and diagnose patients, provide training to professionals in the surrounding regions to ensure more children and families receive the diagnostic assessments they need, and connect families with autism services in their communities.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) reports to the Director, Child and Youth Ambulatory Services at McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Interprofessional Practice. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the ASD Diagnostic Hub at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to\: provide direct patient care, conduct initial developmental screenings, administer standardized diagnostic tools, providing counseling, feedback and education to families, enhancing care coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams.
Current Certificate of Registration in the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC)
Completion of a Post-Master’s of Nursing--Nurse Practitioner program with a focus in pediatrics or Primary Health Care (PHC-NP)
Minimum of 4 years recent acute/primary pediatric clinical nursing experience, relevant experience in developmental pediatric or pediatric mental health an asset
Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology
Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent
Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development and ability to access appropriate community or hospital-based resources in setting of developmental delays
Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children, and provide health teaching, education and links to community services and resources for children and their families
Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, organization and prioritization
Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, initiative, organization, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations, and ability to work in a collaborative role with members of the multidisciplinary team
Knowledge and experience in change theory and pediatric learning principles
Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology
Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario, and other professional organizations relevant to the role
Certification in PALS and relevant certificates recommended
Committed to acquire new knowledge and ensure competency
Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level
