Position Summary
Registered Practical Nurse, Maternal, Newborn and Paediatric Program - Nursing Resource Team
As a member of the Maternal, Newborn and Paediatric Nursing Resource Team, you will provide nursing care across multiple clinical areas within the program, with a primary focus on Labour and Delivery and Postpartum units. The successful candidate will receive a broad range of program-specific education, and training in L&D, Postpartum and Paediatrics; including training related to obstetrical surgical procedures as a Scrub Nurse within the Labour and Delivery Operating room.
Your goal in this position is to provide excellent patient and family-centred care, in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. You will do this by collaborating within an interdisciplinary team of care providers, with an emphasis on the assessment, education, prevention, maintenance, and restoration of patient health. You’re a great relationship builder, and foster professional development with peers across the entire organization. You have great interpersonal skills, and effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. You also have excellent assessment skills with clinical knowledge of care of the Maternal, newborn and paediatric population. You have effective organizational, problem-solving, prioritization, time management and teaching skills. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.
On a practical level, you will
Provide nursing care within the Registered Practical Nurse scope of practice across designated areas of the Maternal, Newborn and Paediatric Program.
• Primarily support patient care in the Postpartum Unit and Labour & Delivery.
• Collaborate with Registered Nurses, physicians, midwives, and members of the interdisciplinary team to deliver safe, high-quality people centred care
• Maintain competencies in maternal-newborn, neonatal, antenatal, postpartum, and paediatric nursing practice as required for assigned clinical areas.
• Function as a trained Obstetrical Operating Room Scrub Nurse following successful completion of required education, orientation, and competency validation.
• In collaboration and under the direction of a RN, provide assessment for antenatal patients in L&D triage and the maternal newborn program.
• Participate in ongoing education and competency maintenance to support clinical excellence and evolving program needs.
• This role offers the opportunity to practice in a dynamic maternal-newborn environment while supporting the continuum of care from the antenatal period through childbirth, postpartum recovery, and newborn care.
Qualifications
• Registered Practical Nursing diploma from a recognized Community College
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
• Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) education, current or eligible to obtain upon hire
• Acute Care of the At-Risk Newborn (ACoRN), current or eligible to obtain upon hire
• Recent breastfeeding course (I.e. RNAO or WHO)
• Fetal Health Surveillance certification, preferred
• Perinatal Certificate, preferred
• 2 to 3 years of Postpartum/Maternal-Newborn experience, required
• Paediatric experience, an asset
• Operating Room Certificate and operating room experience, an asset
• Bilingualism in French/ English, an asset
• Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills
