Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse OR Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join the Electroconvulsive Therapy team at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Apply today to join our team!

 

As a Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse you will:

  • Provide nursing services for clients before, during and after undergoing Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) treatment and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment for conditions such as clinical depression, unipolar and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease, both by working independently and as a member of an integrated care team.
  • Prepare the client for treatment, assist with the informed consent process, administer the transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment from an electromagnetic device as prescribed by the physician and/or assist the physician during the ECT procedure.
  • Provide education and support to client and family, perform direct nursing care as appropriate to ensure the comfort and safety of clients undergoing procedures, providing post-ECT care, and assisting with discharge/transfer following treatment.
  • Prepare for and responds to fluctuating workloads and unexpected critical situations.
  • Consult, confer, and collaborate with colleagues and other health care providers.
  • Demonstrate expertise and leadership in nursing practice.
  • Maintain and advance clinical competence.
  • Participate on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.

ABOUT WILLOW PAVILION (VGH)

 

Willow Pavilion is a Regional Tertiary Mental Health & Substance Use facility located on the Vancouver General Hospital Campus.  It is an advanced practice environment that offers wrap-around services to clients experiencing refractory psychiatric conditions. The interdisciplinary team includes occupational, physical, vocational, and recreation therapists and assistants, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation workers, doctors, peer support workers and others.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of a recognized critical care nursing program or two (2) years’ recent, related critical care experience or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to clients with severe and persistent psychiatric illness who are undergoing Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) treatment and/or transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment (TMS):
  • Demonstrated knowledge of concurrent disorders, substance use and abuse, harm reduction strategies including assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of conceptual models of psychiatric care including: person and family centered care, trauma-informed care, recovery model in mental illness and psychosocial rehabilitation methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
  • Demonstrated skill in the initiation and management of IV therapy and administration of IV medications.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess client responses during procedure and to respond appropriately including potential complications and care issues commonly encountered in a critical care environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the indications, actions, reactions, routes, dosages, and side effects of anaesthetic and other drugs used in critical care environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to a critical care environment such as conscious sedation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the indications, actions, reactions, routes, dosages, and side effects of anaesthetic and other drugs used in critical care environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of critical care monitoring and support equipment.
  • Demonstrated skill in performing autonomous scope of practice and standards of care relevant to designated client population.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in the development and delivery of educational programs and materials for clients and families based on education theories, principles and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to document client care on appropriate systems/forms in accordance with organizational and unit standards in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform duties of the position.
