Role Overview 

 

The primary function of the Surgical LPN is to assist by preparing exam rooms, taking patient histories, and assisting with skills such as suturing, biopsies and excisions. This role is also accountable for ensuring patients receive exceptional care and are provided with the “U” experience throughout their visit with their physician. 

 

Role Objectives  

 

The Surgical LPN’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

  • Closely assist surgeons and medical staff with elective and ministry procedures 
  • May assist non-surgical nurses with treating conditions such as acne, eczema, rashes, skin cancer, atopic dermatitis, hair loss, skin infections, etc. 
  • Observe, assess, monitor, and document patient symptoms, reactions, and progress 
  • Educate and inform patients about self-care, medication management, and disease prevention 
  • Responsible for medical device reprocessing between patients to ensure proper sterilization of equipment 
  • Responsible for completing all necessary training required for medical device reprocessing and participate in internal and external audits as  
  • Council patients in a confidential manner on the details and risks of procedures and treatments 
  • Possess advanced product knowledge to educate and advise clients on appropriate care out of clinic 
  • Assist physician with charting and billing needs 
  • Receive additional training in biopsy, suturing, and removals before assisting with said procedures 
  • Follow clinic protocols to ensure no medical or clerical errors are made 
  • Communicate effectively within the nursing team to ensure a cohesive team environment  
  • Perform procedures such as suturing, biopsies, and removals  
  • Participate in in house and out of house training as  
  • Responsible for clean-up and cleanliness of treatment rooms 
  • Responsible for the on-call phone on a rotational basis to ensure patients have access to care following their surgeries. Calls may occur after regular business hours.  
  • Follow clinic procedures to ensure medical inventory is accurate and kept up to date 
  • Perform other duties as requested by management and supervisory team 

 

 

Role Qualifications  

 

  • LPN diploma from an accredited institution 
  • Current registration within the provincial licensing body  
  • Current CPR certification valid within British Columbia  
  • 2+ years of private or public practice nursing experience 
  • Previous experience in a surgical environment (preferred) 
  • Experience using MedAccess (preferred) 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Ability to work as a team and independently 
  • Flexible availability, willingness to work weekends and evenings
