Overview 

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, and procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal expertise,the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences.  The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patient and families and other health care providers.

 

Education 

-  Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Competence issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
-  Current BCLS mandatory with completion of ACLS within eight (8) months
of hire and recertified every two years.
- Completion of a certified Health Assessment course (within last 5 years) required OR
Perianesthesia Nursing Certification (within last 5 years).
-  Perianesthesia Nursing Certification required and/or be successful in obtaining within (8) eight months of hire.

 

Qualifications 

- Must have two (2) years of recent Acute Surgical Care and/or ER nursing experience in the last 5 years required.
- Previous experience in a Pre-Admission Clinic an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to interview patients (required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical procedures (required).
- Demonstrated ability to educate patients about their upcoming surgical procedure and assessing patients' understanding of expectations of surgical outcomes.
- Demonstrated understanding of Adult learning principles required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) required.
- Clinical expertise in Venipuncture required.
- Demonstrated experience in obtaining ECG and ECG interpretation an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
 - Demonstrated competence and willingness to work at the full scope of practice (as outlined by CNO).
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and have superior organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Position is required to rotate to Perianesthesia Care Unit (PCU) once certified.
- Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Health Service (skills & abilities considered).
- Work involves lifting, considerable walking and/or sitting, standing, bending, pushing andpulling of equipment.
