The nurse practitioner (NP), having a specialty-based focus, functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions. The NP practices according to the philosophy and standards of UHN and the Division of Nephrology and integrates knowledge and skill from nursing and medicine in order to assess, evaluate, diagnose, and treat individuals who have renal failure requiring in-center hemodialysis. The role is a balance of independent practice and collaboration with the nephrology interdisciplinary health care teams and work in a team of nephrology NPs. We welcome NPs newly graduated, or one semester ready from completion, with a supportive community of practice to help develop the NP in the acquisition of specialized nephrology skills, knowledge, and experience during the immediate onboarding and beyond.
